Everything you need to know about TeamSpeak 3.

What is TeamSpeak?

TeamSpeak (colloquially abbreviated TS) is a communication system (often also known as Voice-Over-IP) that allows you to write and mainly talk to other people on the Internet. TeamSpeak is used in all gaming areas, no matter if MMORPG, Shooter, MOBA or other genres. Especially in the tactical area, where quick agreements between players are mandatory, TeamSpeak is the ideal solution. The current version is TeamSpeak 3, the predecessors are no longer used. The program is available for free, so almost everyone uses it, although only a few have their own server.

TeamSpeak has won over the players mainly because of its simple channel structure, very short delay and particularly good sound quality. Direct alternatives such as Mumble or Ventrilo could not keep up, especially in the German area, Skype or Discord are often used, but both have different target groups, because they are used especially because of the chat function and Skype because of the video function.

A dedicated TeamSpeak server – The most important things at a glance

TeamSpeak encourages communication among each other, and if you want to play and talk with friends from all over the world, this program is a must. Often you think about having your own server for the common group or guild. We’ll explain when it’s worth renting a server and what you should be aware of.

A musicbot for the TS³ Server can be handy, especially if you like to listen to music. Best take a look at our comparison, where you will also find an overview of all the features a musicbot has to offer.

Do we really need a server?

The question whether you really need your own server, you have to answer for yourself. If you are a guild/group that meets regularly and likes to have a place for yourself, then having your own server is definitely a good choice. If you’re rarely in TeamSpeak, there are public servers for almost every game and community where you can create a temporary and sometimes permanent channel. If you run a community yourself, you should definitely offer a server. Sometimes you can find several people to get the money together, and sometimes it’s a good idea to give different guilds or groups their own space on the server.

An own server has many advantages. You can set up the channels, assign passwords to certain areas and even include a calendar, general tips or advertisements in the channel descriptions. If you also have the rights, you can remove people who behave badly or harm your community from the server yourself.

Was muss mein Server können?

The success of TeamSpeak is also due to its simple structure. When buying a server you can mainly influence the following four things:

The number of users should depend on your personal group/guild. Assuming you are playing with a group of 5 players, about 10 slots are worthwhile, because you might want to have a second group of friends to train with or just talk to a few more people. If you run a large guild, clan or community, you will need a larger number of slots.

The name of the IP is a nice bonus, which is especially worthwhile if you want to attract many players to your server. It just sounds better if you have a server with “Clanname.de” instead of “12345:6789”. But if you only play in a small group, you can do without this bonus.

A bonus is also the file transfer that can be used with TeamSpeak servers. So you are able to upload files to a channel and others can download them. There are cases where the file transfer is a good thing, but most of the time you don’t need it. A few MBs included are quite nice, but you shouldn’t book a complete flatrate (unless it is included from the beginning), because it’s just unnecessarily expensive.

What you should definitely pay attention to is the availability of all voice codecs. Some players have a worse internet connection and want channels in lower quality to avoid overloading their line. Other players want the best quality possible, while others want special channels with a focus on music.

Musik Bots

Music bots are a nice addition to TeamSpeak servers and one should distinguish between different types. On the one hand you can build your own music bots, which are then controlled by you as a new client in the Channel. To do this you have to change some of your sound settings.

The other alternative is the direct purchase of a bot. You can control it via the web interface, add music to it and listen to the same songs together in the channel. This is especially recommended for the cozy guild that likes to sit together and listen to music.
