A world in Terraria can be created in different sizes, which can have different advantages depending on how you play.

What sizes can I choose from at Terraria?

There are 3 different types of world sizes in Terraria:

  • Small
  • Medium
  • Large

The size of a world in Terraria and the accessible area are measured in feet and blocks, where 1 block = 2 feet.

How do I change the size of the world in Terraria?

  1. stop your Terraria server
  2. connect to your game server via FTP
  3. search for the directory terraria/tshock/
  4. in this directory you will find the file Config.json, open it with an editor
    1. alternatively also serverconfig.txt
  5. search for the line autocreate=, this will create a new world if none is found
    1. 1 means small; 2 means medium; 3 means large
    2. example: autocreate=2 the option creates a medium world
  6. now save the changes and (re)start the server

The different sizes of a Terraria world offer different advantages and disadvantages depending on the way you play.

Advantages of a small world in Terraria

  • Changing locations and traveling is shorter
  • Underworld and flying islands are easier to reach
  • Jungle temples are easier to find
  • Loading and saving the world is faster and uses fewer resources
  • Resources are easier to find

Advantages of a large world in Terraria

  • More building space and a larger world to explore
  • There are more resources, chests and flying islands
  • Larger dungeon and longer underworld
  • Larger jungle temple with probably more traps and Lihzahrd energy cells.
  • More varied and interesting overworld

Worth knowing

You can create multiple worlds and take your characters and all collected items with you from world to world. This makes it possible to start in a smaller world and continue the adventure in a larger world.
