Fishing rod - manufacture

Materials:

  • 3 sticks

  • 2 threads

Crafting recipe:

  • Diagonal line with sticks

  • Two threads vertically on the right side

Prey types

There are three categories of catches:

  • Fish (approx. 85% chance) - cod, salmon, pufferfish, tropical fish

  • Treasure (approx. 5% chance) - Enchanted books, nameplates, saddles, bows, fishing rods

  • Trash (approx. 10% chance)- Leather, bowls, rotten meat, boots, algae

The chances can be optimized by enchantments (see below).

Fishing procedure

  • Right-click to cast into the water (surface, natural or artificial water)

  • Wait for splash animation (particles and bubbles approach the float)

  • Right-click to retrieve as soon as the float is pulled under water

  • Loot is automatically dragged into the inventory (if space is available)

Enchantments

  • Lure - Shortens waiting time for bite

  • Luck of the Sea - Increases chance of finding treasures, reduces trash

  • Durability (Unbreaking) - Extends the life of the rod

  • Repair (Mending) - Repairs rod with collected XP

Possible uses

  • Fish farm - Automatic fishing with redstone & water streams

  • Food - Cooked fish as a reliable source of food

  • Treasure hunt - Obtain rare items such as nameplates or books

Tips

  • Make sure there is clear sky above the water area (for best yield)

  • Fishing in the rain increases the catch rate

  • Use AFK fishing rigs with tripwire, hook and notepad

Trivia

  • Fishing also works in the rain, but not in the Nether

  • Tropical fish cannot be cooked, but are popular for aquariums

  • Fishing rods can also pull in mobs, boats and items
