Extraction

Shearing sheep

  • With one shear you get 1-3 wool per sheep

  • Sheep regenerate wool by grazing

Kill sheep

  • Drops 1 wool in the current color

Crafting

  • 4 threads = 1 white wool (alternatively dyed with dye)

  • Chests in villages, pillager outposts or bastions occasionally contain wool

Dyeing

  • Wool can be dyed when crafting:

  • 1 white wool + 1 dye = colored wool

  • Sheep can be dyed directly with dye

  • Offspring inherit random mixed color of parents (in mixed pairs)

Use

  • Beds (3 wool + 3 wooden planks)

  • Carpets (2 wool = 3 carpets)

  • Decorative blocks (e.g. flag background)

  • Note blocks - different tone color depending on the block underneath

  • Redstone isolation - wool does not conduct a redstone signal

  • Protection against sound - Can prevent vibration transmission with Skulk sensors

Tips

  • Create an automatic sheep farm with observer, scissors & dispenser

  • Use colored wool to design pixel art, buildings or logos

  • Use wool over music blocks for different musical instruments

Trivia

  • Wool burns quickly and can be destroyed by fire or lava

  • Wool has low explosion resistance, but stacks well

  • Before the introduction of shears, wool had to be obtained by killing sheep
