Camels in Minecraft

Camels are large, passive mounts from desert villages that can carry two players at the same time. With their jump-dash function and resistance to small mobs, they are ideal for long journeys.

Properties

  • Lives - 32 (16 hearts)

  • Speed - Similar to horses, but slower in the sprint, but persistent

  • Jump type - Instead of high jump, a fast sprint (dash), with recharge time

  • Height - Players on camels are too high to be hit by zombies or other melee mobs

Taming & Riding

  • Camels are tamable from the start - no extra taming process necessary

  • Simple right click with empty hand to mount

  • Can only be controlled with one saddle (one saddle for two riders)

  • Dash function can be charged with space bar - ideal for crossing obstacles or ravines

Breeding

  • Food - Cacti

  • Two camels fed with a cactus produce a camel foal

  • Young animals grow faster with more cacti

  • Immune to small melee mobs thanks to their size

  • Dash jump allows you to quickly jump over fences and chasms

  • Good overview when riding due to elevated position

Tips

  • Use camels for long journeys through deserts or flat biomes

  • Lead them with a leash or guide them by having one player ride them and another follow

  • Build a stable gate 2 blocks high as camels are taller than horses

Trivia

  • Camels occasionally sit down - they have to stand to be ridden

  • They cannot be ridden or moved when sitting down

  • They are the first mount in Minecraft that can transport two players by default
